Up in arms about 'Smoke'

I've been meaning to blog about my dining experience at Smoke for weeks now. I've been busying myself with things like Glee, V, and Fingerless Ghost . (more on those kids later) The old Cliff Cafe' next to Bar Belmont took a bit of a vacay and in step with Dallas tradition got a face lift, a chic monosyllabic name- Smoke , and a new man(ager). I first visited Smoke, located at 901 Fort Worth Ave., during its evening bar hours; I always say meeting new people is best done with a little social lubricant. I got a text from a friend saying it was "bumping" so my gf and I decided to kick off our chucks and put on some pumps for the occasion. By the time we arrived, all of 11:30 p.m., there were only a few recently cut bar staff from Bar Belmont, and one or two pasty black-clad hipsters smoking languidly on the patio. This was their first official night open, other than their buzz-making grand opening VIP party. I will give super kudos to our awesome bartender for the k

I'm always up for some tasteful accordian

I've been "hearting" the Theater Fire ever since my friend Daniel gave me a burned CD several years ago. I've seen them go from virtually un googleable to being routinely mentioned on KERA's Art & Seek calendar and blog. I seriously made them a music myspace (yeah, I said the M word) just so I could add one of their songs to my profile. THAT'S how un-findable they were. That was then. These days the TTF (that's right, they demand the article) is riding moderatley high on their sophomore album "Matter and Light". They just concluded their west coast tour and are about to embark on the East coast leg of it. Before this group of guys sets off again check them out at Lee Harvey's. They draw a great group of dancers. Young blonde hipsters doing the pasty shoe-gazer dance (picture it...they gaze, at their shoes, and do a little shimmy sham-sham, clever huh? oh, and they're pasty, cause they're hipsters). Free Movie at the Nasher Scuplture Garden tonight

The Nasher Sculpter Center with the help of Fidelity Investments, is offering FREE movies all summer on Thursday and Friday nights. Tonight's film "You've got Mail" starts at 9pm. If you're looking for some cheap entertainment (and I don't mean the movie) head over the sculpture garden with all of the Booker T. high schoolers and old people and pop a squat on that comfy grass and watch Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan make out. Then look around and watch the awkward art school kids make out* too. Eww...just typing that makes me wanna spew a little bit. Oh, and bring the kiddies. They'll at least learn how to spell Fox. "Eff-Ohh-Ex". *Making out for awkward art school kiddos means sharpie-ing each other's "vintage" Chuck Taylor converse, backpacks, or iPhone covers. aww, young love.

Painter, I don't even know her!

Calling all my artist peeps. Peep this: http://www.deepellumtexas.com/art.php Deep Ellum sculptures and murals are finally getting a much needed makeover thanks to the Farmer's Market TIF fund. As you can see, some of the art over in Art Park is pretty ca-reepy. What's she doing anyway? Well, if you don't find this mural as "touching" as the original artist did, submit your ideas to repaint one of the sculptures (especially the one above!) in Art Park. Do your part to de-creep Deep Ellum. Maybe by the time the green line opens up there'll be something to go to Deep Ellum for.

Cruisin the Cliff

often while out in the world i snap pics of whatever is around me. This was taken the Sunday before Mardi Gras near Bishop Arts. TJ and I were out discovering the area, or -Cruisin the Cliff- as I've decided to call it. It's my new Saturday afternoon activity as I prepare to move there this May. I was searching for prospective rental properties and we came upon a ton of parked cars. Bishop Ave was closed for a Mardi Gras parade! We were too late for the actual parade, but the band was still playing so we grabbed a root beer from the soda gallery ( www.thesodagallery.com ) and trekked up and down the block. I really can't wait to finally move to Oak Cliff. There is such a great community of artists there. Oh, btdubs, the soda gallery is accepting submissions for their tribute to the 40th anniversary of Abbey Road, by the Beatles. Submissions, all mediums, are being accepted through March, show is April 25th.

blogging on the go?

This is my first mobile blog, sent completely from my cell phone. Now, no one is safe! I can snap a photo, write a snarky caption, and send it to the world wide web in seconds!! muwahahahah I'm pretty stoked. Stay tuned for an edition of "Hipster or Homeless"

Calling all Cliff Dwellers

I'm searching for a new pad. My pal Kim is relocating to Dallas in May and we're looking for a cute place in the Oak Cliff area. Anyone have a real estate agent or apartment locator they really like with properties in Oak Cliff? Here's what we're looking for: Kessler Park area or Bishop Arts area or Winnetka Heights area dogs AND cats ok (1 each) 2 bedroom 1.5 or 2 bath (1 is acceptable if the place is right) parking behind a gate, or behind the house/apt/bldg Keep your eyeballs to the rent signs and let me know if you come across any leads!

I could really use a cup of coffee

The last time I tried to post on this thing everything I typed was in Hindi. How do I know it was in Hindi? I googled it of course. How odd to have my blog auto-translated to Hindi. I took this as a sign. Maybe I was supposed to travel to Northern India, become a Bollywood film producer. Perhaps I was supposed to meet a nice Indian man and settle down. Maybe I was supposed to learn more about Hinduism. I wasn't sure After 4 months of research, Indian dating sites, yoga study (not practice mind you!) I realized that auto-translation is an option on this website. I must've accidentally clicked it one day. But I did re-discover the Cosmic Cafe. MMM tasty! In these tough economic times I have taken to bringing my lunch to work every day. Because I essentially have a working lunch I usually leave around 2 or so to have coffee with Danny. After a nice long coffee chat I returned to my car in the Preston Center parking garage. A woman approached me and said, "Ma'am. You are t
