The French, Freshman, AFFD, and HP7 Part 2

There are a ton of very interesting things going on tonight in Dallas. So many that I decided to blog about what I consider your top four best bets for tonight.

If you're super caffeinated you can make two of the four events! I've paired them below in no particular order of awesomeness.

Oh, and go ahead and accept that you're gonna be tired tomorrow. But it's Friday, nobody really does any work on Friday.

1. Bastille on Bishop

DOWN WITH FEUDALISM! or something. but in French. Why people in the Bishop Arts District want to celebrate Bastille Day is beyond moi, but I'm always down with lots of butter- and those French are never too shy with the butter. So, bust out that striped shirt and your beret and mime your way over to the Bishop Arts district for tons of activities, including the 2nd annual Mussel Competition. There are top chefs from local fine restaurants that will be serving up mussels for judges in three waves. I hate to say it, but if you don't already have your mussel tickets you may be out of luck. Get down there ASAP and check with Eno's for tickets. It's cash or check only (that goes for the wine glasses too).

If there aren't any mussel tickets left-or you think they're bottom feeders and therefore inedible, like I do, come on down anyway and eat your weight in saucisses (sausages) on baguettes with caramelized onions mmmm caramelized onions. Or of course, frites! street food galore! There will also be a Petanque court, which has something to do with hollow metal balls. I got bored after reading skimming the google search results. Apparently it's a French sport- whatevs. Fun starts at 6pm! Oh and ride your bike or walk. there will be NO parking. None. nada. zip. not even for you. Ok, there will be some parking, but put your walking shoes on.
Here are the chefs for tonight's mussel competition:

  • Scott Romano, Charlie Palmer
  • John Tesar, The Commisary
  • Tim Byres, Smoke
  • Matt McCallister, formerly of Stephen Pyles… new restaurant TDB
  • Marc Cassel, Peavy Road
  • Tony Gardizi, Decanter
  • David Anthony Temple, Underground Dinners
1b. Dive in Movie at the Belmont Hotel
Party at the Moon Tower!
Since you're in the OC (Oak Cliff) head over to the Moon Tower, er... Belmont Hotel for their "Dive in movie". Tonight's selection is Dazed and Confused. Enjoy the best (seriously, the BEST) view of downtown Dallas and lounge in their ultra chic pool and sip away on cocktails or PBR (and other things but let's be real. that's what you're going to order). During their last dive in movie- Harold and Maude- they had delicious dogs and sausages, in case you aren't filled up on french food. Or if you suddenly find yourself needing some munchies- they've got you covered. You don't have to sit in the pool, but why the hell wouldn't you? It's like 100+ degrees. Show starts right after sundown. The best real estate (lawn and pool) is usually taken by around 8:15pm. (but really their grass is SUPER soft. like, I think they have a layer of down underneath it or something) I'd say it's about 50/50 swimmers vs. land lovers. Oh, and if you drive I'd suggest parking off of Sylvan avenue just behind the Claire Vista Vitality Club. Walk up the steep ass hill and the pool will be on your right.

2. AFFD (Asian Film Festival of Dallas) Opening Night Party

AFFD is 10 years old this year! Come celebrate tonight at Lumi Empanada and Dumpling Kitchen in the heart of Uptown at 3407 McKinney Avenue. The open RSVP is now closed but if you previously RSVP'd via FB you should be fine. This event requires cocktail attire and they will have wine and hors d'oeuvres and DJ R3VO will be spinning all night. Mingle with the beautiful and start picking out your films for the next week. Open acces begins at 8pm with VIP only from 7-8pm. Kick it until 10pm then head off to the next item...

2b. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 at midnight. I really shouldn't have to say much about this. I mean, obvi you're going. Just be sure to load your coffee maker tonight.

Bastille and Belmont are technically FREE events. If you want to eat and drink then you'll need to shell out some clams, but not too many. AFFD is also totally free, just make sure you've RSVP'd. HP7 isn't free but worth the $10-$15. Have fun out there Dallasites!

Up in arms about 'Smoke'

I've been meaning to blog about my dining experience at Smoke for weeks now. I've been busying myself with things like Glee, V, and Fingerless Ghost . (more on those kids later) The old Cliff Cafe' next to Bar Belmont took a bit of a vacay and in step with Dallas tradition got a face lift, a chic monosyllabic name- Smoke , and a new man(ager). I first visited Smoke, located at 901 Fort Worth Ave., during its evening bar hours; I always say meeting new people is best done with a little social lubricant. I got a text from a friend saying it was "bumping" so my gf and I decided to kick off our chucks and put on some pumps for the occasion. By the time we arrived, all of 11:30 p.m., there were only a few recently cut bar staff from Bar Belmont, and one or two pasty black-clad hipsters smoking languidly on the patio. This was their first official night open, other than their buzz-making grand opening VIP party. I will give super kudos to our awesome bartender for the k...

How to avoid hand cramps when you're in the 3rd grade

A t the beginning of the third grade my mother moved my brother and I to a new school. She did this often. With each move I attempted to blend in and fade away with the other children; but with a younger brother whose rebellious reputation was known in the tri-county area and a mentally ill mother this never seemed to happen. Each time I would gradually become known as the good student with the crazy mother and hellion brother. This meant I was never invited to sit with people at lunch, or play at recess. At our young stage of development we didn’t understand that mental illness was not something you caught; that my raving mother’s appearance outside of homeroom would not infect our teacher, or my classmates. I was blacklisted. Determined for this move to be different I decided to reinvent myself, to remove as much of my family as I possibly could. When I walked into my first class at this new elementary school and the teacher called out my name, “Elizabeth Johnson” I replied, “Act...

Subject: Mini Kiss just ate the last bagel

In 2005 I was living the high (mediocre) life in the city of Angels, L.A. working in this business we (they, or someone) called show. I wasn't just working in television, I was working in live television. And as if that wasn't enough of a chaotic setting for a great story for you, I also happened to be working for the first (yes, FIRST EVER) GLBTQ television network, appropriately called: Q Television Network with absolutely no experience. The details of how I found myself living in LA as a fresh college senior dropout from the tiny little hipster hotspot of Denton, TX will come later; because rest assured, I had no lifelong desire to work in production. I was a poetry major after all. On this particular sunny day I'm sitting in my office, with my staff (yes, at 23 I had a STAFF! Small, but still...) when I receive an email on my Sidekick. The sender was Jon, a new friend I'd made who worked in acquisitions. The subject was: Mini Kiss just ate the last bagel. The b...
